this is my first strop i have ever purchased so my opinion is limited to that, anyways.the paddle is exactly what the description says. strop has 2 leather sides, i used the white (fine polish), and the green on the other (medium). this strop and compound does work, after sharpening your blades this is a must to retain the edge as well as put a razors edge on them, it will put a mirrors shine to the cutting edge on any blade. after realizing the sharpness i could receive i went on a stroping spree with all my kitchen knives. i used mainly 1095 carbon steel and this works great for that, stainless takes a little more work to polish up but it does do the trick. recommended for sure. 4 stars because its my first strop, my limited experience.I knew exactly what I was buying, but hope springs eternal, so I was still disappointed. Too short, too rough, too easy to cross-contaminate. The four stars are better than this strop would deserve if I hadn't known the shortcomings ahead of time, but I can't give five stars to a product just because I can't find anything better, so there you have it.Here's what I'm going to do: I'm going to purchase 2 1/2 inch by 18 inch or longer leather belting, gorilla glue, and a couple of pieces of birch plywood - and make my own strops to my own standards. Maybe I'll sell my surplus (if any) on a competing web market site (rhymes with "etsy" or maybe "me-bay").Excellent, after making a couple of strops myself I broke down and bought this one. It came with three compounds (red) course/ (green) medium/ (white) fine. These compounds were easy to apply to the leather which is high quality as well. I was concerned that this would work on my benchmade as it has D2 steel, but not only did it work quickly, starting from the coarsest grit working my way to the fine grit. All I can say is wow. I could shave before using this as I already had a nice edge which you need before stropping but after it would shave with no resistance or sound. The only thing I would change is alittle thicker handle and seal the wood. other than that excellent product and fast shipping. Thanks!!!!!!This strop is awesome! Definitely a good buy in my book. I wanted a strop because if you know anything about knives, stropping is the hands down most practical way to get a razor edge on a knife.I could have made my own strop but didnt really have time so I just bought this one.The compound included is enough to last you the rest of your life.I stropped all my knives. Specifically, my Spyderco Delica 4 FFG. Before i bought this strop, my Delica could slice through paper with ease. It was very sharp. I ran it against this strop for maybe 1-2 minutes. Used green and white compound.Afterwords, it was cutting circles in paper.Buy itNice sized strop. Well made and great fit and finish.Hang it up to store when not in use using included leather string.Three types of abrasives included.Includes two sides and I know I will buy a second strop to allow all three abrasives to be put to use. Thanks for a well made product. One complaint however, this product needs a warning label.“Use of this strop may be addictive”Thanks againStrop is well made and delivered quickly. I am not happy with the polishing compounds, though: they are too waxy. The polishing compounds probably work well on an electric buffer, but there's too much lubrication in the compounds to use as a hand stropping polish. This works good for polishing out a blade that has a good edge. The only thing I would have preferred would have been if it were a bit larger, the size is a bit small. The polishing compounds do work well.I have found that there is a little separation between the leather and the wood, altho it has not become a issue yet.i thought item was a too expensive for what you receive but it does work well. If you have any skills at all you could build your own very cheaply and just buy the green compound which seems to work the best to me. It was my decision though. Not disappointed with item.... just the price.
